Last week, we had the great pleasure of interviewing drummer Kenny Washington at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. In short, he blew our minds.
Yes, he's incredibly knowledgable. And yes, he's got infectious charisma.
But what really made us open our eyes (and ears!) were the connections he made between the John Kirby Sextet and bebop pioneers Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Turns out, Kenny toured with Dizzy, and got some first-hand insight into Diz's deep love of the Kirby band, and its' primary arranger and trumpet player, Charlie Shavers.
"There's three trumpet players that you do not want to mess around with," Diz told Kenny. "KD, Kenny Dorham. Hot Lips Page. Don't call a blues if Hot Lips Page is on the bandstand. He'll wipe you out. And Charlie Shavers. They'll make you cut your throat."
We hope you enjoy the first of our Savory interview series. More to come!
